Two Days in Moganshan from Shanghai
The 5.5-6 hour round trip is a constant, only one of the four meals is the house to cover, 78 houses of three floors have no lift, and coach parking returns zero records. Four ledgers for a Shanghai team outing, with picks by headcount.
1. Three options for a Shanghai team outing, each with its own hard limit
Team outings from Shanghai split into three tiers by drive time and each sells something different. City half-day or full day: a meeting room plus a meal, almost no commute, but there is no night. Time together compresses into four to six hours, billing is per head and per session, so more people costs more. Near suburb day trip, one to one and a half hours out: it fills a daylight day, the main activity happens on the programme, climbing frames, kayaks, fruit picking, and you pay per activity plus per head.
Moganshan, two days and one night, two and a half to three hours out, is the third tier and the only one selling an entire house for 22 hours. Its limits are equally clear: you must stay overnight, you must fill the capacity of one house, and you accept a 12:00 check-out. The tiers are not ranked by quality. The question is whether you are buying time or a house. Buy time and one hour of commuting solves it. Buy a house and you pay five and a half to six hours of driving.
- City half or full day: 0-1 hour commute, no night, priced per head, suits 10-30 people and light activity
- Near suburb day trip: 1-1.5 hours, no night, priced per activity plus per head, suits 20-60 people outdoors
- Moganshan two days: 2.5-3 hours, includes a night, priced per house per day, suits 15-45 people who need their own space
2. Five cases where you should not drive to Moganshan
This is a filter, not politeness. Moganshan is not the answer to a Shanghai team outing. It is one of three products, and in these five cases the trip is a loss.
The first is the hardest to say out loud: fewer than 15 people. The smallest house here sleeps 10, but the price of a house does not depend on headcount. Splitting it 15 ways instead of 30 doubles the cost per person, and not one minute of the six hours of driving goes away. The second is needing only half a day of activity: the smallest unit on sale is 22 hours and you would use four.
Third: someone in the group is pregnant, recovering from surgery, or badly carsick. The last 29 km is mountain road at 35-40 km/h with no alternative route. Fourth: the budget only covers the house. Four meals and a vehicle are the other half of the bill. Fifth: what you actually want is dinner and karaoke, which two hours in the city delivers without driving 192 km.
- Under 15 people: the house price is fixed, small groups cannot spread it, use a city day instead
- Only half a day of activity: you would use 4 of the 22 hours you are buying
- Someone cannot take mountain road: the last 29 km has no alternative
- Budget only covers the room: four meals and a vehicle are the other half
- You only want dinner and singing: the city does that in two hours
3. Six hours of driving does not depend on headcount, so fill the house first
The arithmetic usually missed: the round trip is a constant five and a half to six hours, whether you bring 20 people or 40. Measured, Shanghai to Moganshan is 192-195 km and 127-136 minutes, with the last 29 km taking 45 of them. Across the 100 listings here, straight-line distance from Shanghai runs 156.3 to 176.8 km with a median of 166.9, and the middle half of them differ by only 4.1 km, under ten minutes of driving. Picking a house closer to Shanghai is worth at most ten minutes, which is not a filter worth applying.
Commute cannot be spread across more people. Only the house price can, and that is per house. So the sequence inverts: choose the house, then fill it. There is one cliff in the way, because houses here are built around two sizes, 20 people and 40:
The 35 to 39 band has a single listing site-wide, the narrowest point on the whole capacity curve. A group of 35 has two workable moves: shop the 40-person band and pay for a few spare beds but go from one candidate to twelve, or split into two houses of 20 and 15 and pay for the second house to gain a second living room and kitchen. Do not search for 35. There is nothing there.
- 20-24 people: 31 listings
- 25-29 people: 11 listings
- 30-34 people: 6 listings
- 35-39 people: 1 listing
- 40-44 people: 8 listings, and 4 above 45
4. Two days and one night means four meals, each landing somewhere different
The itinerary says two days and one night. The logistics ledger says four meals: Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, Sunday lunch. Each lands in a different place, and mixing them up is how the day falls apart.
Supply first. Across the 100 listings: restaurant at 82, barbecue at 86, kitchen at 42, shared kitchen at 36. That looks comprehensive until you filter by capacity. Of the 61 listings sleeping 20 or more, only 21 have a kitchen; of the 19 sleeping 30 or more, 4; of the 12 sleeping 40 or more, 3. The bigger the group, the less likely you can cook for yourselves.
Sunday lunch is the one that most often goes wrong. 98 listings require check-out by 12:00, so that meal cannot happen in the house. It happens down the hill, in town, or on the road back to Shanghai. Saturday lunch is usually eaten in the vehicle or just after arriving. Realistically only two of the four meals belong to the house: Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast.
- Saturday lunch: on the road or in town, book somewhere that can seat everyone at once before you leave
- Saturday dinner: the main event, barbecue at 86, restaurant at 82, kitchen at 42, for 20 or more favour a kitchen or a venue you can take over
- Sunday breakfast: the only meal the house is responsible for, see the next section
- Sunday lunch: check-out is 12:00, eat it down the hill and do not schedule it inside the house
5. Breakfast is the one meal the house owns, and the only one with a price tag
This is the line item most often missed. 99 of the 100 listings state breakfast in their policies, but only 57 publish a price. Among those 57 the median is 39 yuan per person, ranging from 10 to 128, with a quarter below 30 and a quarter above 58. For 40 people that is 1,560 yuan for one breakfast, eaten once.
Timing matters more than price. When service starts shapes the whole two days: 54 listings do not open until 08:00, of which 33 close at 10:00 and 21 at 09:30, and only 10 can serve at 07:00. Check-out is 12:00. So if you want the group rolling out at 09:00, you first have to confirm this house can open at 07:00, and only one in ten can.
One more layer: of those stating a style, 79 are Chinese-style, not a western buffet. Forty people eating a Chinese set breakfast moves at a completely different pace from a buffet line. Ask whether it is self-service or plated, by table or by portion.
- "What time does breakfast open and close, and can you open at 7 for 40 of us?"
- "Is it a buffet or plated, served by table or by portion?"
- "How much per person, and is it included in the room rate?"
- "We have people avoiding spicy food, eating vegetarian, or with allergies. Can you prepare separately?"
6. Forty suitcases and six lifts in the whole inventory
Almost nobody thinks about this in advance. Of the 100 listings, 82 have rooms up to the third floor or higher, and only 6 mention a lift. That leaves 78 houses of three floors or more with no lift. The median ratio of guests to bedrooms is 2.44, so a group of 20 takes about eight bedrooms, usually spread over two or three floors.
A group of 40 means 40 suitcases going up, all arriving at the same moment. This is not about comfort, it is about time: carrying 40 cases up a three-storey house with no lift takes half an hour on a good run, and an hour if it rains or the stairwell is narrow.
The good news sits at the other end: 95 listings offer luggage storage. Between the 12:00 check-out and boarding the coach, bags have a home and do not need to go back on the vehicle. The hard part is the one trip up.
- Tell everyone before departure: one overnight bag each, large cases stay on the ground floor or on the coach
- Ask before booking: how many floors, is there a lift, how wide is the staircase
- Assign two people to luggage rather than letting 40 people carry their own cases upstairs
- After check-out, confirm bags can be stored until you leave in the afternoon
7. Moving 40 people: coach parking returns zero records site-wide
Shanghai groups above 30 usually charter a coach, and this is the emptiest part of the data. The words for coach, bus and minibus appear zero times across all 100 listings. Not one states coach parking. Every parking field you can query is car-sized: free parking at 100, private spaces at 51, EV charging at 60, valet at 55, car-hailing at 82.
That does not mean a coach cannot park. It means you have to ask, because the page cannot tell you. Three questions: can a 50-seat coach reach the door, since the last few hundred metres into some villages are narrow; where does it actually park, since some houses only have roadside space; and can it turn round when it leaves.
Direction matters too. 89 listings are closer to Moganshan town and only 11 are closer to Wukang, the county town, so coming from Shanghai you plan for the Moganshan town side and ignore the old advice to exit at Deqing, which is Wukang and adds a median of 8.7 km of mountain road. Separately, vehicles entering the scenic area must transfer at Yucun between 08:00 and 17:30, but none of the 100 listings falls inside the scenic area boundary, so an entire-house booking drives to the door as normal.
- "We are chartering a 50-seat coach. Can it reach the door, and where does it park?"
- "Is there room to turn round at the entrance, and how narrow is the village road?"
- "If the coach cannot get in, how do we move luggage from the drop-off point to the house?"
- "Should we navigate to Moganshan town or to your address, and should we avoid the Deqing exit?"
8. What to book at each headcount, and six questions for the phone
Putting the ledger above together, here is the practical read by headcount, then the six questions worth asking on the call.
- 15-19 people: shop the 20-person band. There are 39 listings in the 10-19 band but the cost does not spread
- 20-29 people: 42 candidates, the most comfortable band for two days, favour the 17 with a kitchen
- 30-34 people: only 6 left, book two months out, and only 4 of them have a kitchen
- 35-39 people: one listing site-wide, shop the 40-person band or split into 20 plus 15
- 40 or more: 12 listings, settle coach access and breakfast first
- "What time is breakfast, and can 40 of us eat at 7?"
- "How many floors, is there a lift, and we have 40 suitcases."
- "Can a 50-seat coach reach the door, and where does it park?"
- "Which of the four meals can you cover, and can we use the kitchen?"
- "What are the quiet hours, we want to run an event on Saturday evening."
- "After the 12:00 check-out, can bags be stored until the afternoon?"
