How to Plan Two Days and One Night in Moganshan
Two days and one night sounds like 48 hours, but you will realistically have about eight usable ones. Working backwards from the 14:00 check-in that 81 of our 100 verified properties share, here is an itinerary you can copy — plus three times you must confirm in advance.
1. Do the arithmetic first: two days is not 48 hours
Most people plan on the assumption that "two days and one night" means two days of time. It does not. We went through the check-in policy of all 100 whole-villa properties we list in Moganshan: 81 of them state a check-in time of 14:00 or later, and check-out is almost always before 12:00 the next day. From key in hand to key returned, you actually hold the house for 22 hours.
Take out eight hours of sleep and 14 remain. Take out moving luggage, waiting for latecomers, washing up and general faffing, and what is genuinely left for doing things together is around eight hours.
That number is not meant to make the trip sound rushed. It simply settles which activities deserve a slot and which do not. Once you plan against eight hours, a lot of the "we can squeeze that in too" ideas fall away on their own.
2. Nothing starts until 14:00, so leave in the morning
If the door only opens at 14:00, the morning is pure travel time. Moganshan is 60–80 km and about 1.5 hours from Hangzhou, and roughly 200 km and 2.5–3 hours from Shanghai. Leaving before 10:00 gets you to Yucun around midday, which means lunch first and then straight into the property — the smoothest possible rhythm.
Work it the other way: leave Shanghai at 15:00 and you arrive close to dusk. By the time you drop the bags, it is time to sort out dinner — and the day has delivered one meal and one late-night conversation.
So treat "what time can we arrive" as the first decision, not "what time do we leave". Fix the arrival time and work backwards from there.
- From Hangzhou: 60–80 km, 1–1.5 hours — leave before 10:00
- From Shanghai: about 200 km, 2.5–3 hours — leave before 09:00
- From Suzhou: about 180 km, 2–2.5 hours
- From Nanjing: about 250 km, roughly 3 hours
- By high-speed rail to Deqing or Deqing West, then 20–40 minutes by road
3. Dinner is the only slot where everyone is present
Within those eight usable hours, dinner is the one moment when everybody is guaranteed to be in the same place. During the day some people arrive late, some are in the pool, some are napping — but when the meal comes round, the group is whole.
That makes dinner worth a bigger share of the budget and the planning. Every property we list (100 of them) offers free parking and all 100 have restaurant or dining provision — but far fewer can seat 20 or more at a single table. If your group is around that size, settle the seating capacity at booking rather than discovering it on the night.
Cooking for yourselves is the underrated alternative. 42 of our listings have kitchen facilities, and at a group size of 20, self-catering usually lands at about half the per-head cost of eating out. The washing, frying and table-setting also pull people together faster than any icebreaker.
4. Quiet hours decide how much evening you actually get
This is the rule that catches people out most often. We tallied the quiet-hour start times across our listings: 25 properties from 22:00, 18 from 23:00, 9 from 21:00, and 38 with no fixed quiet hours at all.
If your property goes quiet at 22:00, the window where the group can be loud is roughly the two or three hours between dinner and ten — in practice your only evening. A property at 23:00, or with no limit, gives you considerably more room.
There is a subtler version of this too: events being allowed does not mean you can go all night. 84 of the 100 properties we list explicitly permit events, but a good number of those also set quiet hours. These are two separate policies and both need confirming — do not stop at "can we host events?".
5. The second morning is shorter than you think
Check-out is generally before 12:00. Subtract packing, checking for anything left behind and clearing the kitchen rubbish — at least half an hour — and your usable morning is roughly 08:00 to 11:30.
Three and a half hours is enough for one thing, not two. Pick hiking or cycling, not both, and do not try to visit the scenic area and still be back in time to check out. If the previous night ran late, an unhurried breakfast and an hour in the garden is the better call.
One practical note: most properties expect guests to clean the kitchen and take out the rubbish themselves, and some charge an extra cleaning fee. Agree the standard with the host before you arrive and the last morning goes much more smoothly.
6. An itinerary you can copy
Putting the above together gives a two-day, one-night plan for a group of around 20. When you run it, simply shift every time earlier or later by the same amount.
- Day 1 · 09:30 — Depart (from Shanghai; from Hangzhou you can leave at 10:30)
- Day 1 · 12:00 — Arrive around Yucun, lunch (dining inside the scenic area is limited; eat in Yucun or Deqing town)
- Day 1 · 14:00 — Check in, allocate rooms, drop bags
- Day 1 · 14:30 — Pool, lawn or mahjong, free time — when the group genuinely starts to relax
- Day 1 · 17:30 — Cook together or head to the booked restaurant
- Day 1 · 19:00 — Dinner, group photo, awards or long conversation (the only slot with everyone present)
- Day 1 · 22:00 — Watch the quiet hours; most properties start limiting noise now
- Day 2 · 08:00 — Breakfast (self-catering if the property has a kitchen)
- Day 2 · 09:30 — Outdoor activity: choose one of hiking, cycling or the scenic area
- Day 2 · 11:30 — Back to pack, clear the kitchen and rubbish
- Day 2 · 12:00 — Check out, lunch, head home
7. Two things to adjust by group size
Twenty to thirty people is the best-supplied band in Moganshan — of the properties we list, 42 sleep 20–29, the largest group of any bracket. There is enough choice here to pick on budget and preference rather than settling.
Above 40, the logic changes. Only 12 of our listings sleep 40 or more, supply narrows sharply, and you will usually also need to confirm whether a coach can get up the mountain and whether the dining can seat 40 at once. Start confirming a month ahead.
One detail worth calling out on its own: where extra beds are not allowed, the headcount must stay strictly within the limit. 72 of our 100 listings allow extra beds; the other 28 do not. If your numbers are still moving, plan for "expected maximum + 2".
