Getting from Shanghai to Moganshan

Compare the four ways to reach Moganshan from Shanghai by true door-to-door time. The one-hour train is station to station: Deqing station sits a median 18.9 km of mountain road from the 100 villas listed here.

1. Start with the verdict: none of the four options is fast

Shanghai to Moganshan is roughly 168 km in a straight line and, door to door, consistently two and a half to three hours. There are only four realistic options: a self-drive convoy, a chartered minibus or coach, high-speed rail with a transfer, and high-speed rail with public transport.

Set the standard before the comparison. For a group, convenient does not mean fast — it means one leg, no transfers, and luggage handled once. Ranked by that standard the order is nothing like the order by elapsed time, and the theoretically fastest option turns out to be the hardest to use once you pass 20 people.

One conclusion up front: this question has almost nothing to do with which house you end up booking. Section two has the numbers.

2. First, a premise: from Shanghai, all 100 properties are the same point

Measured against People's Square, the 100 properties on this site sit between 156.3 and 176.8 km away — a spread of only 20.5 km.

What matters more is the shape of the distribution: three quarters of them fall between 165.7 and 169.9 km, a gap of just 4.2 km. At 30 km/h on the mountain section, that is under ten minutes of driving.

So picking a house a bit closer to Shanghai is worth at most ten minutes, while picking the wrong mode of transport costs an hour or more. How you travel decides this trip; which house you sleep in does not.

3. The one-hour train is station to station, and the omitted leg is the variable

Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing runs about 13 services a day; the fastest direct train takes 1h03, most fall between 1h09 and 1h16, and second class costs between 72 and 103 yuan. Compressed into one hour by train to Moganshan, the trouble is exactly the part that gets dropped.

Deqing station sits in Qianyuan town, not in Moganshan. Against the 100 property coordinates: median straight-line distance 18.9 km, maximum 26.4 km, and only 2 properties within 10 km. That leg is mountain road rather than motorway — at roughly 24 km of road distance and 30 km/h, the median is about 47 minutes, three quarters of properties take over 45, and the furthest runs past an hour.

The usual line is that Deqing station is 15 to 20 km and 25 to 30 minutes from Moganshan. That measures to the town centre around Yucun. The 100 properties sit a further median 4.0 km beyond that, with only 36 within 3 km, and the last stretch is another 10 to 15 minutes. Added up properly: about 1h10 on the train + 45 to 60 minutes of station time + 45 to 60 minutes on the last leg, which comes to 2h40 to 3 hours. Level with driving, not better.

4. Work backwards from the 14:00 check-in: the earliest and latest trains are the worst two

99 of the 100 properties hand over the room at 14:00 or later (81 say after 14:00, another 18 give a window from 14:00 or require 15:00), and 98 require checkout before 12:00. One night is roughly 22 usable hours.

That fixes one thing: an earlier arrival is not a better arrival. Here are the realistic Shanghai Hongqiao departures re-ranked by arrival-at-the-door time, allowing 45 to 60 minutes for the last leg and 15 minutes to clear the station and find the car.

Which produces a counter-intuitive result: catching the first train and leaving after work are the two most common plans, and they are also the two worst. The return leg has the same trap — about 9 trains a day run Deqing to Shanghai, and after a 12:00 checkout the first afternoon departure is 16:46, arriving Songjiang 17:37 and Shanghai South 17:56. That leaves you holding four to five hours and all the luggage. Either store the bags in town and take a later train, or charter a vehicle.

  • G3091 dep 06:20, arr 07:36 — at the door about 08:45, then 5h15 waiting for the room
  • G8357 dep 09:35, arr 10:49 — at the door about 11:55, roughly two hours of waiting
  • D2283 dep 11:20, arr 12:53 — at the door about 13:55, landing exactly on check-in; this is the best option
  • G687 dep 12:12, arr 13:21 — at the door about 14:25, slightly late but still workable
  • G1419 dep 17:39, arr 18:42 — at the door about 19:35, leaving only dinner and bedtime on the first evening
  • G8301 dep 20:31, arr 21:43 — at the door about 22:35, walking straight into quiet hours that start at 22:00 on 25 properties

5. Five cases where Moganshan is the wrong answer

In fairness, in these situations the 168 km is not worth it and somewhere near the city is the better call:

  • Fewer than 10 people: the smallest property here sleeps 10, and only 14 fall in the 10 to 14 band, so the per-head cost never comes down.
  • Only half a day: five to six hours of pure driving for under two hours actually inside the house.
  • Someone in the group cannot handle a long car ride — late pregnancy, post-surgery, severe carsickness, elderly parents. The mountain section is continuous switchbacks with nowhere to pull over.
  • The budget is meant to go on one good meal: booking a whole villa buys space and the right to stay the night, not a food standard.
  • The plan is to rely entirely on public transport and ride-hailing: Deqing station is 45 to 60 minutes away and no car is guaranteed up the mountain.

6. Self-drive: the only option that solves luggage and local mobility at once

Three reasons it is the group default: luggage is handled once, you can actually leave the house on day two, and subgroups move without waiting for each other. The price is that somebody has to drive the mountain road. Split the route in two — about 150 km of motorway, then 20 to 30 km of continuous bends. Do not budget the whole trip at one average speed; the formula is motorway distance divided by motorway speed, plus a fixed 30 to 40 minutes for the mountain section. That is also why Hangzhou, only 44 km away in a straight line, still takes an hour and a half: the last stretch eats a third of it.

Parking is fully covered here: all 100 properties offer free parking, and of those about 60 have EV chargers, 55 offer valet parking and 51 have private bays. Charging is a hard requirement for an electric convoy and roughly 40 have none — confirm before you rent.

One point about mountain access control is widely misread. Since 30 November 2018, between 08:00 and 17:30, vehicles entering the scenic area must route via Wumo Road to the Yucun tourist transfer centre, or enter through the Houwu transfer centre. But none of the 100 properties here fall inside the Moganshan Scenic Area boundary, so the rule does not affect reaching your own house; it only applies when you go into the scenic area itself. Do not read it as meaning you cannot drive up at weekends. The real trap is navigation: do not type in Moganshan Scenic Area, because there is a checkpoint at the foot of the hill and vehicles without a booking are turned back. Ask the host for exact coordinates.

7. Which mode of travel, by headcount

Size decides both the mode of travel and how many properties you still have to choose from.

  • 10 to 19 people (39 properties): two to five cars is easiest, or rail plus a 17-seat minibus for the transfer.
  • 20 to 29 people (42 properties, the widest choice): five to seven cars, or one 33-seat coach. Both work at this size.
  • 30 to 39 people (only 7 properties): the candidate pool collapses here, so charter one vehicle rather than letting a convoy scatter.
  • 40 or more (12 properties, the largest sleeps 75): charter a coach, but confirm parking by phone first. A coach is 11 to 12 metres long, and passing on the mountain road or turning inside a courtyard is a real problem.

8. Four questions to ask before you pay

Once the travel mode is settled, the remaining information gap is almost entirely on the phone. Ask these four before paying a deposit.

  • We are X people in X cars coming from Shanghai — what exact address should we navigate to, and is the mountain road manageable? Do not search for Moganshan Scenic Area yourself.
  • We arrive at X — can we store luggage first, and when is the room actually ready? 95 properties store luggage and 99 hand over the room at 14:00 or later.
  • We are not driving — can you call a car for us, and is there anywhere to eat within walking distance? 82 offer a car-hailing service, but availability on the mountain is not guaranteed.
  • Can a coach or minibus park here? Mandatory for any group above 40.
