Which Cities Are Near Moganshan?
We calculated straight-line distances from the real coordinates of 100 properties to five source cities — and explain why 44 km still takes ninety minutes, and how drive time decides whether your trip should run one day or two.
1. The short answer: where Moganshan is, and which city is closest
Moganshan sits in Deqing County, Huzhou, Zhejiang — south of the geographic centre of the Yangtze River Delta, wedged between Hangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou and Ningbo. That position is precisely why it became the region's default group-trip destination: for every major city, it falls inside an acceptable drive.
But "nearby cities" is easy to misjudge. We calculated straight-line distances from the real coordinates of the 100 properties we list, and the result is not what intuition suggests: about 44 km to Hangzhou, 103 km to Suzhou, 168 km to Shanghai, 179 km to Ningbo and 193 km to Nanjing.
In other words, Hangzhou is the only source city at commuter distance, while Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo all sit in the 170–190 km band. That spread is what decides whether your trip runs one day or two.
2. Drive times from five source cities
Sorted by straight-line distance. Drive times are estimated ranges based on real road conditions — mountain roads run far slower than motorways, so distance divided by average speed will mislead you.
- Hangzhou | approx. 44 km straight line (properties 29–55 km) | approx. 1–1.5 hours | the only source city that supports a day trip
- Suzhou | approx. 103 km (98–113 km) | approx. 2 hours | Shenjiahu Expressway, then Hangning Expressway
- Shanghai | approx. 168 km (156–177 km) | approx. 2.5–3 hours | Huhang or Shenjiahu Expressway
- Ningbo | approx. 179 km (161–188 km) | approx. 2.5 hours | Hangyong Expressway, then Hangning
- Nanjing | approx. 193 km (182–209 km) | approx. 3–3.5 hours | Ninghang Expressway
3. Why 44 km still takes ninety minutes
This is the most commonly misjudged point, and the most practical. Hangzhou is only 44 km from Moganshan in a straight line, yet the drive is about 1.5 hours — an average of roughly 30 km/h. Two reasons: the motorway only reaches Deqing, after which you drop onto county roads; and once inside Moganshan it is all hairpins, gradients and narrow lanes where speed is simply not available.
This "mountain discount" applies to every source city, and it is a fixed cost — whether you come from Hangzhou or Nanjing, the final 20–30 minutes up the mountain cannot be avoided.
So budget your time as "motorway distance ÷ motorway speed" plus "a fixed 30–40 minutes for the mountain section", not "total distance ÷ average speed". The latter underestimates by more than an hour and puts you behind from the start.
4. Drive time decides the length of the trip
How long a Moganshan trip should be is fundamentally set by the one-way drive. And check-in is a hard constraint: of the 100 properties we list, 81 admit guests from 14:00 and 90 require check-out by 12:00. From keys in hand to keys returned, you actually hold the property for about 22 hours.
Put that constraint next to the drive times and the choice becomes obvious:
- From Hangzhou (1–1.5h): the only source city where a day trip works. But check-in is not until 14:00, so leaving in the morning is awkward — eat lunch in Yucun, enter the property after 14:00, run the evening, check out at noon the next day. For a genuine day trip, plan daytime activity only and do not expect to use the property.
- From Suzhou (approx. 2h): borderline. A day trip means 2 hours out, about 6 hours on site, 2 hours back — workable but tiring. One night is better.
- From Shanghai (2.5–3h): one night minimum, no debate. Three hours each way is six hours of travel; on a day trip the useful group time drops to 4–5 hours — less than the journey.
- From Ningbo (approx. 2.5h): same, plan one night. Watch the Hangzhou ring road at evening peak.
- From Nanjing (3–3.5h): one night is the floor; we would suggest two nights, or tagging on leave. At 3.5 hours each way you are spending half a day travelling, and a single night makes the return on that hard to justify.
5. By rail: Deqing is the only station, and it is not the destination
Without a car, high-speed rail is the main option. The relevant station is Deqing (and Deqing West): roughly 20–30 minutes from Hangzhou, 1–1.5 hours from Shanghai, and 2–2.5 hours from Nanjing (most services via Hangzhou). Check live timetables for actual services; tickets are tight around holidays, so book early.
Here is the trap almost everyone falls into: "an hour by rail from Shanghai to Moganshan" does not hold — that hour gets you to Deqing station, and the town of Moganshan is a further 15–20 km, about 25–30 minutes by car. Once you climb, the gradients and narrow lanes add more still.
So the real rail journey is "train time + 30–40 minutes of transfer". Groups above 20 also need to allow for splitting across vehicles — one car will not take everyone.
- Ask the property in advance whether they can arrange a pickup, and at what vehicle size and cost (some offer paid transfers).
- At weekends and in peak season, ride-hailing at Deqing station is stretched; calling a car on arrival can mean a long wait.
- Coaches can reach Moganshan, but mountain passing needs a driver who knows the route. Confirm in advance whether a coach can park on site.
6. A counter-intuitive conclusion: the further you travel, the more a whole villa makes sense
The instinct is that a longer journey calls for more thrift. At Moganshan the opposite is true: the further your source city, the better value a whole villa becomes.
The reason lies in how villas are priced: per property, not per person. The total for a given property is fixed — 20 of you or 30 of you, the price is the same. The more people, the thinner the cost per head.
And for distant source cities, the largest cost is not the room rate but the time spent travelling — three hours each way is six hours. That time is being paid regardless. Spend it on one night with fifteen people and you have traded six hours of road for a single tight gathering. Fill the group and add a night, and the same travel cost is spread across far more useful time.
Which is why the 12 properties that sleep 40 or more deserve serious consideration from Shanghai and Nanjing groups in particular: your travel cost is already high, so use it properly.
7. Frequently asked
The whole article as direct answers.
- Which city is closest to Moganshan? Hangzhou — about 44 km straight line, roughly 1.5 hours by car. Suzhou is next at about 103 km.
- How long is the drive from Shanghai? About 2.5–3 hours, depending on where in Shanghai you start. Leaving the city on the Huhang corridor is congested on holiday mornings — aim to depart before 07:00.
- How far is Nanjing from Moganshan? About 193 km straight line; the road distance is longer, and the drive is roughly 3–3.5 hours.
- How do I get there without a car? High-speed rail to Deqing station, then about 25–30 minutes by road into the mountains. Build that transfer into your total.
- Can it be done in a day? Only from Hangzhou, marginally — and since check-in is at 14:00 you will not really use the property. From anywhere else, allow at least one night.
